Decide by what happens after the download
People ask which format is best as if one answer covers everything, and it never does. The right format depends on where the file goes next. A clip destined for your phone has different needs from a voiceover headed into an editor or a song you plan to keep for years. Start from the destination and the choice gets easy. Start from abstract quality charts and you will drown.
My rule of thumb is boring but it works: pick the format your playback device likes, at the smallest file size you cannot hear or see the difference in. Compatibility first, size second, theoretical quality third. A flawless file that stutters on your hardware is worse than a slightly compressed one that just plays.

MP4 versus WebM for video
MP4 is the universal donor of video files. Phones, tablets, TVs, game consoles, editors and every social app accept it without complaint. Inside, the picture is usually H.264 and the sound is AAC, a pairing with decades of hardware support behind it. When you doubt anything, choose MP4. I have never met a device made in the last ten years that refused one.
WebM exists for the open web. Its VP9 or AV1 picture can look slightly sharper than H.264 at the same file size, which is why browsers love it for streaming. The catch is everything outside the browser. Plenty of phones play WebM now, but editors, older TVs and Apple hardware can still choke on it. Bottom line for most readers: download MP4 unless you have a specific reason to want WebM. Smaller is nice, but a file you cannot open is not a bargain at any size.
The audio lineup, format by format
Audio is where the menu gets crowded. VidDLP lists MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC, FLAC, Opus and OGG, and each one is somebody's favorite for a reason. Lossy formats like MP3 throw away sound data to shrink the file, while lossless ones like WAV and FLAC keep everything and pay for it in megabytes. Neither camp is wrong. Two confusions come up constantly. M4A versus AAC: M4A is the container, AAC is usually what sits inside it, so treat them as the same family. Opus versus OGG: Opus is the newer codec and the stronger one, while OGG Vorbis is its older cousin. Opus wins on voice clarity per megabyte by a distance that surprised even audio engineers when it launched.
What I grab in common situations
Music for the phone: MP3 at a decent bitrate, or M4A if you are on an iPhone. Both sync everywhere and neither will embarrass you through earbuds. Anyone claiming they can hear the difference between a good MP3 and the studio master through ten-dollar earbuds is selling something.
Spoken word, lectures, podcast episodes: Opus if your player accepts it, MP3 if it does not. Voice compresses beautifully, and a two-hour talk that fits in 60 megabytes is hard to argue with. The YouTube to MP3 converter handles this job well when the source is a video essay or interview.
Audio you plan to edit: WAV, no contest. Every cut and effect you apply to a lossy file degrades it a little more, so start from the full signal and compress once at the very end. Storage is cheap, re-recorded takes are not.
Music worth keeping forever: FLAC. It holds every bit of the source while cutting the file roughly in half compared to WAV. Just confirm your player supports it first, since some Apple apps still pretend FLAC does not exist.
